Our beautiful, forested landscape is home to ample wildlife, including bears. While bears in most cases will avoid humans, they are attracted to garbage, making proper management important. Waste Management offers free bear-resistant containers upon request in 35, 64, and 96-gallon sizes – watch a video of a bear unsuccessfully tackling one of these containers.

Along with garbage management, hiking is another area where residents can follow best practices such as wearing a bell to let wildlife know you’re in the area or carrying a whistle to make noise and frighten a bear or cougar.

In a Wildlife Awareness Forum last spring, Rich Beausoleil of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife also recommended keeping dogs on a leash while hiking the trails, limiting the chances of an off-leash dog bringing a predator back to you.
