Residents are invited to a Community Center Expansion Town Hall on February 28, 2024, 7pm, at the Snoqualmie Community Center/YMCA gymnasium. The Town Hall is an opportunity to learn more and ask questions about the City’s Community Center Expansion Project that will expand the existing city-owned building and add an aquatics center to meet the needs of local youth, teens, adults, and seniors.
Project team members from the City of Snoqualmie, Absher Construction, and ALSC Architects will provide an overview of the Community Center Expansion project, share latest proposed designs, and answer questions from attendees.
The town hall is also an opportunity to learn more about facility programs and how they support the Snoqualmie Valley community; explore facility hours, open drop-in times, and daily and monthly facility usage options.
Background
The Community Center Expansion Project is part of the City’s approved Capital Improvement Plan, with $15 million in funding appropriated in the 2023-24 budget. The facility is owned by the City of Snoqualmie and is operated on behalf of the City by the nonprofit YMCA of Greater Seattle through a long-term agreement. The facility was constructed in 2011 using funds provided by the developer of the master-planned Snoqualmie Ridge community, real estate excise tax, and grants. The ongoing maintenance and operations are supported by program and usage fees of facility users and not the public. The facility is open to everyone and will continue to be when expanded.
The existing undersized facility – which also serves as a designated City emergency shelter - is too small to support the current population which has grown approximately 30% since opening. The Snoqualmie Valley is also deficient in aquatics space to meet the demand for swimming and water safety education, with only one small 85-year-old publicly owned pool to serve the local area.
The City’s operational agreement with the YMCA, as well as the nonprofit’s inclusive mission, ensures public access through free teen drop-in hours, daily passes, monthly memberships, and scholarship programs for those with demonstrated financial needs.
