La Niña Predicted for Winter and Spring: Wetter and Colder

News & Announcements Posted on November 19, 2020

Snoqualmie, WA – According to forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center – a division of the National Weather Service – we are entering a La Niña event that will last into next spring.

For the Pacific Northwest, a La Niña means chances of below-normal temperatures and wetter conditions. This forecast gives us all time to be prepared for what may come in the months ahead and to minimize impacts on lives and livelihoods.

COVID-19 is another reason to prepare your home for long durations inside in case of quarantine. Governor Jay Inslee has issued a travel advisory for Washington, recommending a 14-day quarantine for interstate and international travel and asks residents to stay close to home.

Here are some recommended items to have on-hand in an emergency home kit, most of which can fit in a portable container or a backpack.

  • Water – 1 gallon per person/day (7-10 days)
  • Non-perishable food (7-10 days)
  • Manual can opener
  • First aid and hygiene items
  • Prescriptions
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Radio (battery-powered or hand-crank)
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Blankets
  • Cash (small bills)
  • Baby food and supplies
  • Pet food
  • Emergency phone numbers, important documents
